The transmission tower at Kokavil, shattered by the tiger terrorists is being reconstructed. The terrorists took complete control of the Rupavahini transmission tower and only its ruins remained when the troops liberated the area. The work was launched today under the guidance of head of the Uthuru Wasanthaya Task Force and Senior Presidential Advisor and Parliamentarian Basil Rajapaksa. The work commenced with the laying of the foundation stone this morning. The event took place under the patronage of Ministers Anura Priyadharshana Yapa, Douglas Devananda and Rohitha Abeygunawardena and Basil Rajapaksa. Present on the occasion were Secretary to the Media Ministry A. Dissanayake, Director General of the Telecommunications and Regulatory Commission Priyantha Kariyapperuma, ITN Chairman Anura Siriwardena and National Rupavahini Chairman Prof. Ariyaratna Ethugala. The 172 metres tall tower will be built at a cost of 400 million rupees. It will facilitate state and private sector TV and radio channels. In addition, telecommunication companies can also achieve benefits. The tower will also facilitate the Military and the Police in their services. The Media Ministry, the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission and the Central Engineering Consultancy Bureau will handle the construction. Expressing his views Minister Anura Yapa said the ability to launch of the work on the tower, devastated by the terrorists within a short period, is a major victory for the Government.
