Born on a mud floor in Bengal into the vortex of the struggle for Indian independence, Mani survived colonial oppression, cyclone, epidemic, and famine to earn a Ph.D. in physics from India's IIT and a Sloane Foundation fellowship for postdoctoral work at UCLA. Later he achieved international recognition and success as a co-inventor of the laser technology that made LASIK eye surgery possible. Mani's contributions to science merited election as a fellow to the American Physical Society and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, while his successes won him a spot on Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous. Eventually he discovered that "happiness is an inside job" and immersed himself in study of the relationship between science and spirituality and the integration of mind and matter. He has published over fifty papers in professional journals and maintains a lively correspondence with other physicists around the world. Mani is revered in his native Bengal, where he launched and oversees the Mani Bhaumik Educational Foundation, providing full scholarships for the study of science, medicine, and engineering to sixty-seven underprivileged young men and women.
