Infinity Edge Swimming Pools and Their Cost

Infinity pools are also known as vanishing edge or negative edge pools. They have one or more sides where the pool edge terminates in a weir that is 15 to 25 mm lower than the median pool water level. The water cascades over the weir into a collection trough that runs along beneath the whole length of the weir. The effect when viewed by a bather in the pool is very dramatic when the edge appears to merge with sea in the background or even the sky if the pool is located high up on a hillside.

A properly designed infinity edge pool has two circulation systems. The infinity edge system is only designed to run when the pool is being used and consists of a circulation system that takes water from the collection trough, filters it and returns it to the main pool. The other system works in exactly the same way as a conventional pool, filtration and heating circulation system except that the ugly conventional skimmers are not required and the water circulates back through the pump via the drain in the pool floor.

The additional cost of an infinity edge pool arises mainly from the provision of:-

The collection trough that acts as a buffer tank
The water-proofing of the weir and the collection trough
The large capacity infinity edge circulation pump and filter
The electronic autofill sensor in the collection trough

The automatic level sensor / filling device is needed to ensure there is enough water in the system to prime the edge pump and to compensate for any waves sent over the weir by bathers and rainwater. For a 12 x 6 metre pool with one infinity edge the additional cost should be in the 8 to 10,000 Euros range excluding any taxes. The trough and autofill, edge filtration system and the additional water proofing costs will each amount to about one third of this or about 3,000 Euros each. The water-proofing may seem to be costly but a conventional factory made PVC liner is not suitable for an infinity edge pool and needs to be replaced by a PVC "liner armee" system that involves cutting and welding the PVC liner on site.

There is a very interesting alternative to infinity edge pools that is beginning to be sold into the French pool market where Bluepools operates. These are called mirror pools and they are an exciting option when the views from a garden are less than spectacular. In a mirror pool the infinity edge is taken around the entire perimeter of the swimming pool and the weir is drained by a perimeter trough that is much smaller than the collection trough of an infinity pool. The perimeter trough is drained by a network of gravity fed downpipes that take the water to a central collection tank that provides the buffer water storage normally provided by the collection trough in a conventional infinity pool. The cost of a mirror pool will be a little more than the cost of an infinity pool of the same size with the infinity edge along one long side.

The additional operating costs of either an infinity or mirror pool will not be that high because the big pump needed to run the infinity edge system will only operate when the pool is in use. The extra costs will be incurred from:-

The power the pump uses
The cost of the water that is lost due to evaporation from the flow over the weir
The cost of replacing the heat loss caused by evaporation
The heat required for the water replacing the evaporated water

The total additional operating cost is difficult to assess accurately because it does depend on so many variables but it will certainly be less than the cost of heating a conventional pool of the same size using a heat pump.

The development of infinity pools has coincided with the increase in a new trend towards designer pools that are now often seen at exclusive properties and on magazine covers. Many people have property in an ideal location for the installation of an infinity edge pool even more have gardens that would benefit from a mirror pool and I hope this article encourages the development of both.

Hi all! I was bored and surfing on youtube, then i saw a bridge builder solutions link on my recommended videos page. As the game was one of my favorites, i watched it with great desire. But, guess what.. It was a total failure! Lots of unneccessary members, ground contacts, mekanisms.. Top 10 Study Tips For University Success

While it may be true that not everyone learns in the most effective way by doing the same things, there are certain fundamentals that you can follow in order to virtually guarantee yourself academic success during your time at University. No matter what degree you take or what College you're enrolled in, University classes are all structured in similar ways. Lectures, text book readings, assignments, projects, quizzes, midterm and final exams. Knowing the format of the class beforehand allows students to create a strategy that when implemented and stuck to, results in good grades and less stress. Here are our top 10 study habits you should try to implement into your strategy for academic success at University!

#10 - Take Extensive Notes
Probably the most tedious of our top 10, taking good notes is hard to do consistently. In our ADHD world, many students find it difficult to maintain their focus long enough to record the information given out during lectures. However, when it comes time to write a quiz/test/exam you'll be glad you have that pile of notes to review and refresh your brain with. Taking good notes is in itself an act of learning, as one cannot write something down that doesn't make sense on some level. This small act goes a long way in creating the foundation for a solid understanding of the material being covered. Taking notes also has the added bonus of keeping your brain occupied and awake by staving off restlessness and boredom. An excellent method I learned in my first year of Engineering was to scribble down everything that seemed useful in some manner, almost as if you were transcribing the lecture. Later that day, transfer and rewrite the notes into an understandable form in another notebook. This will cement the information into your mind, moving the material from your short term memory into your long term. Lastly, notes have become a source of income for many students as those who take excellent notes are often sought after by the lazier students who are willing to pay a premium for a great set of notes to study from. You will not only get good grades, but you will be getting paid to do so as well. If that's not a win-win I don't know what is!

#9 - Obtain Old Exams and Assignments
If possible, try to find exams and assignments from previous years to give yourself a good idea of what subject matter the instructors are most likely to test you on. They don't have to have the answers to be useful and in fact for many students they are even more useful without because this way the student can attempt the exam/assignment as a check of their knowledge, identifying any weak areas that they should go back and re-study. Old exams and assignments are often made available through class websites, student union websites, or through College clubs or associations. One common tactic many students use for science classes with a lab section is to find a graded lab notebook from a previous year. Labs are notoriously difficult in terms of time constraints and for what's expected from a student lab report. Having a format to follow along with is an incredible help and knowing where not to make mistakes is invaluable as well.

#8 - Begin Studying For Exams EARLY
Between academics and your social life, time is not something you'll have lots of throughout your University career. But one thing you should always make time for is exam studying. There's nothing worse than leaving all of your studying for the night before an important test or exam. The stress causes your brain to panic and when you panic, you won't learn as well as you normally would. Studying a little bit each night during the week leading up to the exam will not only make you better prepared but it will remove most of the stress you'd have if you had left your studying for the last minute. Early exam studying allows a student to identify weak spots in their understanding and to prioritize their studying accordingly. Just imagine studying until the early morning of the day of your exam only to find you've completely ignored a section that you have little to no understanding in. Don't let that happen by studying EARLY!

#7 - Use a Laptop During Class If Possible
If permitted, use a laptop for note-taking during your lectures. Most students can type faster than they can write so they will be able to record much more information than they normally would. If the classroom has WiFi you'll have the added ability to research topics you're unsure of during lulls or breaks in the lecture. If a professor uses a word you've never heard before, just alt-tab over to dictionary.com and look it up! Or, if the lecture is completely flying over your head, e-mail the professor from your seat and set up an appointment to discuss the day's lecture. There are many uses for a laptop during class, I'll let you imagine the other not-so-academic uses. Many students have grown up with a computer being a staple in their lives so it's only natural to use it as a tool for learning as well. It's an easy transition for your brain to go from Facebook to Powerpoint! If a laptop purchase is in your future, refer to our article for tips on choosing a budget laptop for students.

#6 - Use Your Time Wisely
In between classes as well as before and after school, there are many opportunities to sneak in some studying or homework that many students either don't realize or just don't use. I've known people who would study on the bus during the ride to and from school. I've also known people that would combine their time at the gym with their study time! Just bring your notes and instead of watching the TV's and listening to your iPod, wear ear plugs and read your notes. You get a workout for your body and for your brain! Always keep your notes handy and try to use any spare time you have even for simple review to make sure you're on top of the material. All of those small moments you fill with studying will really add up to a solid understanding and you'll find that you require less studying when exam time arrives. That's huge.

#5 - Get Your Questions Resolved ASAP!
University classes tend to operate with the "snowball effect" as the primary method for topic progression. That is, the information is cumulative and the last stuff you learned will be instrumental in understanding the next stuff! So anytime you don't understand something or have a question about the subject matter, get your question answered as soon as you can. Whether by asking during or after class, through an e-mail or phone call to the prof, or even by asking a fellow student, you need to stay on top of the subject matter in order to be ready for the next stuff that's coming. Don't let the holes in your understanding be knowledge pits for the future!

#4 - Get To Know Some of Your Classmates
This one can be extremely difficult and stressful for many people these days. Meeting people is becoming increasingly difficult in a world of social stigmas and fears of disapproval. I'm not going to tell you how to meet people, just that when you do, the benefits will be immediately apparent. Having a buddy to sit with during class, having someone to lean on for notes from a lecture that you missed, being able to bounce questions and ideas off of somebody, and most importantly having someone to check your assignment answers with before you hand it in, are all spectacular reasons to swallow your nerves and start saying "Hi! My name is...." to the people in your class.

#3 - Explore Other Class Resources
Many class outlines will have "optional" reading listed along with the required textbook. This is often a HUGE opportunity for easy marks and guaranteed success in the particular class. Professors are humans just like me and you. Their job is to relay the required material and then test you on it. If they're using the required textbook as reference for the learning part, where do you think they're going to get the material for the testing part? If you said "the required textbook", you're wrong and you need to stop thinking like a high school student! Professors will often take test questions out of their favorite textbooks, resulting in quality assessments from a trusted source. Those favorite textbooks are often listed as optional reading material either on the class website or on the course outline. Also don't forget the mighty Internet. YouTube is an insane resource for How-to's, recorded lectures from other schools, and general knowledge videos on every subject matter imaginable. Use Wikipedia and Google as well to find extra(often better!) resources on whatever it is that you're struggling with.

#2 - Pre-Read Lecture Material
I discovered this one by accident, even if it is, or should be common sense. One night I was bored. Really bored. I grabbed a text book for a class whose lecture I had the next morning and I began reading from the point we stopped at in the previous lecture. It was difficult to understand and took a lot of focus to push through it but the next day in class while listening to the Professor, it crystallized in my mind and was easy from then on. It had the added benefit of being committed to my long term memory giving me a greater and more thorough understanding of the material. It makes sense if you think about it, I was essentially learning the material twice. Once independently and once with the help of an expert. These combined into a solid understanding that I still possess to this day. Now I'd love to suggest that you do this for every class, every night. But we all know that isn't reasonable so what I do suggest is that you use this technique for anything that you deem to be very difficult or abstract. That way you'll have a great head start on understanding and mastering the hard stuff, leaving plenty of time for filling in the gaps with the easy stuff!

#1 - Go To Class!
While going to class sounds too simple to be our #1 most effective studying habit, it truly is and I'll tell you why. Going to class not only keeps you disciplined and focused on what you're at University to do, but it also lets you absorb the subject matter simply by sitting through the lectures. If you're an auditory learner this is huge because just listening to the lectures will create an understanding that should be enough to pass the class in itself! If you're a visual learner then watching the notes being written on the board or reading through the slides during the presentation will give you the necessary understanding to pass the class. Going to class also ensures you have the latest news on assignments, tests, quizzes, and exams straight from your Professor's mouth. You don't want to be that student that shows up for class once a week only to find there's a scheduled test on that day! Simply going to your classes like you're supposed to is much more powerful than most students realize. If you look at the nine tips before this you'll see that most of them actually require this step as a pre-requisite so that should also be an indicator of how important it is to attend your classes without fail.

As a student who has both failed classes and received honors in classes I can definitely say that the above tips and techniques will work for you. Whether you use some or all of them is up to you, but just remember that University is an individual sport and you'll only get out of it what you're willing to put in! The role of a teacher in society is both significant and valuable.It has far-reaching influence on the society he lives in and no other personality can have an influence more profound than that of a teacher. Students are deeply affected by the teacher's love and affection, his character, his competence, and his moral commitment. A popular teacher becomes a model for his students. The students try to follow their teacher in his manners, costumes, etiquette, style of conversation and his get up. He is their ideal.

He can lead them anywhere. During their early education, the students tend to determine their aims in life and their future plans, in consultation with their teachers. Therefore, a good and visionary teacher can play a prominent role in making the future of his students while as a corrupt teacher can only harm his students much more seriously than a class of corrupt and perverted judiciary, army, police, bureaucracy, politicians or technocrats. A corrupt and incompetent teacher in not only a bad individual, but also an embodiment of a corrupt and incompetent generation. A nation with corrupt teachers is a nation at risk; every coming day announces the advent of its approaching destruction.

The importance of a teacher as an architect of our future generations demands that only the best and the most intelligent and competent members of our intelligentsia be allowed to qualify for this noble profession. It is unfortunate to find that generally the worst and the most incapable people of the society find their way into this profession. Anyone who fails to find an opening in any other walk of life, gets into this profession and recklessly plays with the destiny of the nation. An important reason for this is understood to be the poor salaries of our primary and secondary teachers which are no better than that of clerks. A large number of our teachers is , therefore, frustrated and disinterested.

They have to go for part-time jobs to meet their basic needs. Again, the teaching profession also does not enjoy due respect in the society. The primary and secondary teachers are particularly at a disadvantage. Their status is lower than that of doctors, engineers, advocates, civil servants; even lower than that of semi literate and illiterate traders. It would therefore require great commitment for an intelligent individual, however fond of education and training he may be, to forsake the career of a doctor or engineer in favour of teaching. Therefore, while selecting good teachers, it must be borne in mind that better opportunities,prospects and perks are offered to the teachers.

When we speak of good teachers it means that a teacher must be a model of faith and piety and should have a fairly good knowledge . A teacher should consider it his duty to educate and train his students and should feel responsible for it. He should feel that his students have been entrusted to him and he should avoid any breach of the trust the society has reposed in him. He should be a sociable person with his roots in the society. People should take him as their well-wisher and a sincere friend who cares for their children. It should be ascertained at all cost that a candidate for this profession has a natural acumen and aptitude for teaching.

He should actively participate in the social activities in a positive way. He should know the art of teaching with a deep insight into child psychology. He should always deal with the students in a just manner. He should not lose his self-control on mistakes his students may commit, and instead he should respect their feelings and ego, and should try to understand and resolve their difficulties with grace while keeping his cool. He should be able to smile in the face of bitter criticism on his opinions, and should not feel ashamed or humiliated to accept his mistakes wholeheartedly.

He should be proud of his culture, his national dress and his national language.He should be a missionary, a mentor, a reformer and a guide besides being a dedicated tutor. In other words, he should be a perfect teacher and a perfect educationist.
While highlighting the role of a teacher in the society, it is imperative to involve the role of parents, too, in the process of character building of the students. In the past, parents and teachers both used to make the best of their efforts to provide an atmosphere to their children congenial to the development of higher virtues and morals. But the gross social change over the last fifty years, large scale urbanization, ruthless competition for financial gains, and heavy preoccupation in everyday life deplete all time and energy from the parents, leaving behind little time or energy for them to monitor their children.

Whatever time they have at their disposal is consumed by newspapers, television and other recreations. As a result, the younger generation hardly gets any opportunity to share ideas with their elders or to enter into a meaningful discussion. On the other hand, this idea is gaining ground among us that education is not meant to build up better human beings, but only to get better jobs. Consequently, the students' minds are obsessed with better jobs and dreams for higher social status.It is,therefore,duty of the parents, too, to take active interest in the day-to-day progress of their children both in and outside the institution and apprise them of the real meaning of education.

Earthquakes are caused by sudden movement of rock along broken surfaces. Thousands of earthquakes occur in the world every year and a number of these are not even noticed by most people. Some earthquakes are slight while others are strong and have damaging impact on buildings and the lives of people. Earthquakes are the most unexpected natural disasters and when these happen people do not even get time to save their lives. Many buildings collapse as a result of earthquakes and many people get buried under the rubble.

Earthquakes have become a fear for many people and to accommodate this many construction companies are building structures which can withstand earthquakes to a certain degree. For this purpose, it is essential to seek advice from a geotechnical engineer. Geotechnical engineering experts have vast knowledge of plate tectonics and are able to analyze rocks and soil. Their advice could be helpful in constructing structures which will lessen the effect of natural disasters like earthquake.

In a single year, earthquakes ruin thousands of homes and kill millions of people. They occur naturally on the earth's surface due to the movement of plates which are located below the earth's crust. The vibrations arise at the epicenter and that is where the maximum destruction occurs. The vibrations caused by the earthquake have the potential to cause massive destruction and even ruin entire cities.

Earthquakes occur due to two reasons. Firstly, it occurs when a volcano erupts suddenly and secondly due to the movement of plates which can happen due to cracks in the plate or crust waves. Moreover, earthquakes can also arise on the ocean floor and produce ground movements. In the recent years, majority of the earthquakes have occurred at the boundary of the continental plates of North and South America, South Asia and Pacific Ocean. It is believed that stress on the boundary of the plates creates pressure towards the middle and leads to movement of the Earth.

The major consequences of such natural disasters are the loss of human life. The location and magnitude of the earthquake is a major factor which determines the number of lives that will be lost and the number of structures that will be damaged. A huge number of deaths can be caused by collapse of structures which were constructed from heavy and weak materials. Other economic and social consequences include trauma, cost of damage, loss of jobs, loss of housing, business interruption, waste of energy and material.

However, companies and agencies nowadays are implementing strategies as to limit the effect of such natural disasters to some extent. These planning include minimizing the use of land that has already gone through ground damages, shaking, landslides and fault rupture. Their basic aim is to reduce the number of lives that are lost each year due to earthquakes and disasters related to earthquakes and to reduce the damage done to structures and the natural environment. To achieve these goals, many countries are building structures which can withstand the devastating effects of earthquakes.

NASA and industry engineers lit up the Utah sky Thursday with the initial full-scale, full-duration test firing of the first stage motor for the Ares I rocket. The Ares I is a crew launch vehicle in development for NASA's Constellation Program. ATK Space Systems conducted the successful stationary firing of the five-segment solid development motor 1, or DM-1. ATK Space Systems, a division of Alliant Techsystems of Brigham City, Utah, is the prime contractor for the Ares I first stage. Engineers will use the measurements gathered from the test to evaluate thrust, roll control, acoustics and motor vibrations. This data will provide valuable information as NASA develops the Ares I and Ares V vehicles. Another ground test is planned for summer 2010. "With this test, we have taken lessons learned from many years of experience in solid rocket motor development and have built on that foundation," said Alex Priskos, first stage manager for Ares Projects at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala. "Our team collected data from 650 sensors today to evaluate the motor's performance. Scientific inquiry requires students to use higher order thinking skills as they learn science using a hands-on minds-on approach. Inquiry's foundation has its roots in John Dewey's book Democracy in Education (1916). In this book he describes how true learning begins with the curiosity of learners.

Defining Scientific Inquiry

His research found that student curiosity and involvement real science investigations moves students from passive learners to active learners. This is evidenced when students:

ask questions during an investigation
design their own investigations
conduct investigations using their design
formulate explanations of findings
present their findings
reflect upon their findings

Scientific inquiry causes a fundamental change in science education, moving it away from traditional teaching practices of lecture and demonstration to a collaborative relationship between teacher and student. In these collaborative environments, students take risks without fear of ridicule and begin to think about science. Teachers become facilitators of their student's inquiry by:

modeling and immersing their students in scientific inquiry
ask guiding questions which provoke thought and reflection
allow student creativity in experimental design
allow students to discover experiments can be successful, yet fail to answer the original question being investigated

Initial confusion by students analyzing experimental findings is not necessary bad, because they are using critical thinking processes. Confusion is good in this setting, because it demonstrates students are trying to determine why they did not find the typical canned answer. Also, a hypothesis can actually result in a non-support statement as a result of the experiment.

Too often students investigate canned labs which result in a guided hypothesis which can only result in supported finding. This leads them to feel when their experiment does not support their hypothesis they failed. They have not failed, however they do not know this in traditional science teaching.

Scientific Inquiry Involves Asking Questions

Student success designing experiments is based on asking the right questions. They need to develop questions which do not lead to yes/no or true/false answers, because the best questions are open-ended and inquiry-based. As students analyze evidence to explain findings, open-ended questions provide the answers they need to formulate meaningful explanations.

Answering questions in a student's own words is important for higher level of thinking and knowledge. A student's own words disclose level of understanding and reveal misconceptions based on prior knowledge and experiences.

Impact of Using Scientific Inquiry

When students make personal connections when using scientific inquiry, internalization of the new knowledge takes place. The key attributes of scientific inquiry-based teaching and learning result in students:

learning how to design research
learning how to ask questions
internalizing new knowledge
realizing findings depend on experimental design
increasing their level of understanding of science
learning to investigate like scientists

Fellowships Programs For Graduate Students Studying Agriculture

When it comes to agriculture, the real action starts when one obtains a post-graduate degree. After all, what the world really needs now is research into bio-engineering, land depletion, and nutritional research. If a person wants to head those kinds of projects, he or she needs to add several other sheepskins besides a Bachelor's.

Surprisingly, one of the two best sources for fellowships is universities themselves and the government. True, governments are usually not the best source for this kind of financial aid, but apparently, they make an exception when it comes to solving world hunger and nutritional considerations.

For example, probably one of the biggest underwriters of fellowships is the U.S. Department of Agriculture. It is responsible for the Food and Agricultural Sciences National Needs Graduate Fellowship Grants (NNF). The NNF will provide minimum stipends of $18,500 per year for Master's degree candidates and $24,500 annually for Doctoral and post-Doctoral studies. It can also throw in a $3,000 stipend for such expenses as travel, if it's deemed essential. These fellowships can also go as long as two years each.

Another government agency that is seriously invested in agriculture, particularly if it can be STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) related, is the National Science Foundation. It offers a program called the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program. Each year, it administers over 1,000 fellowships to Master's and PhD candidates. To apply for this, one must come up with a proposal offering original research in an area of need. Final determination of the amount of the grant is dependent on the proposal.

There are also other sources of fellowships, too. For example, the American Society of Agronomy has its own Pioneer Fellowship in Plant Science. It is open to any post-graduate who obtained a Bachelor's degree in an appropriate field with a 3.5 grade point average. It then awards a stipend of $25,000 a year for up to four years as long as each year the recipient files a progress report on their studies.

Another interesting source is the Sigma Xi fraternity. Its Grants-In-Aid of Research program will provide post-graduate students up to $1,000 for the purchase of needed research equipment or such expenses as travel. It is open to all students of the sciences and engineering, and that means it includes agricultural subjects.

For those with strong intentions of pursuing a career in the dairy field, there is the Kildee Graduate Scholarship. Each year, it puts out a call-out to post-graduate students throughout a number of accredited universities. From there, the top 25 students are awarded a stipend of $3,000 to assist them in completing their core studies and/or research.

Rebar: Steel Reinforcement for Concrete Structures

Rebar is an abbreviation for the main ingredient in reinforced concrete: steel bars that are embedded in poured concrete footings, walls, slabs and other structures to make them stronger. Small ridges in each piece of rebar create a mechanical connection between concrete and steel after the concrete hardens. As a result, the finished footing, wall or slab gains considerable strength, especially in tension. A reinforced concrete slab or wall will be able to withstand force applied by expansive soil, by settling, and even (in some cases) by seismic activity.

Rebar comes in different thicknesses, and is sometimes coated with a finish to protect against corrosion. Building codes and engineering specifications determine rebar size, spacing and other steel reinforcement details for poured concrete structures. To keep the steel continuous, individual lengths of rebar are typically bent to extend around corners and overlapped so that they can be tied together with steel tie wire. On larger structures like concrete columns and grade beams, rebar "cages" are welded together and positioned inside forms. Concrete slabs often contain rebar as well as welded wire mesh.

Rebar problems are often a factor when concrete fails by cracking, shifting or settling. Contractors sometimes use little or no steel reinforcement in spite of what building plans call for, simply to save on construction expenses. Another problem can occur when rebar isn't positioned correctly, or if it shifts out of position during the pour. If the steel reinforcement is too close to the surface or edge of the concrete, its strengthening properties are compromised and it's more likely to rust, which will weaken the concrete further. There's a high price to pay if steel reinforcement details are poorly installed prior to pouring a concrete structure, and these poor construction practices keep foundation repair specialists busy. Fortunately, a skilled foundation repair specialist can rely on other types of steel reinforcement -like steel piers, brackets and tiebacks, for example-to correct foundation problems that result from inadequately reinforced concrete.

Quality Control and Pre-Construction Testing For Shotcrete

After designing and proportioning, a trial must be made to see how the shotcrete works together with the machine. This is only obtained by using the application equipment on site, not laboratory tools.

1. Concrete Mixes for Spraying

Concrete can be made from a batching plant for wet process. The fresh concrete is transported by mixer trucks and is delivered to spraying machine during shotcreting. Dry mix for dry process can be made using site mixer and delivered to spraying machine using a conveying belt. In some case it is allowed to feed the shotcrete machine manually using shovels.

2. Shotcrete Equipment and Application

Shotcrete machines including pump, dosing unit, air compressor must works in same conditions and procedure as it will work on site. Application process is made by applicator teams that will carry out the job at site in actual work.

3. Samples for Compressive Strength Tests

For pre-construction studies, test panels simulating actual job conditions provide a sufficiently reliable indication of the quality to be expected in the structure. A panel is fabricated by gunning onto a back form of heavy plywood or steel plate.

A separate panel should be fabricated for each mixture proportion being considered, and also for each shooting position to be encountered in the structure, down, horizontal, and overhead. The mixture proportions should be overdesigned to produce sample strengths higher than the design strength.

The panel should be large enough to indicate what quality and uniformity may be expected in the structure; generally it should be not less than 30 inches (750 mm) square. The thickness should be the same as in the structure except that it should normally be not less than 3 inches (75 mm).

Cubes or cores should be obtained from the panels for testing. Cores should have a minimum diameter of 3 inches (75mm) and an length/diameter (L/D) of at least 1. The specimens should be tested in compression at the required ages. Core strengths should be corrected for L/D as described in ASTM C 42. Cube strengths may be reported as determined, or converted to cylinder strengths by multiplying by the factor 0.85.

The Land Dictates the Plan - Practical Advice for the Owner/Builder

When a potential owner/builder has decided to move toward the process of building a new home, I regularly see a bit of confusion where the "cart before the horse" comes into play. What I mean by that is owner/builders try and concentrate on the design or plan idea before they have secured land or a lot.

I understand the excitement of the plan design process and putting on paper their ideas for their dream home, and let me share some insight on why it is important to have your land purchased first. Here are some considerations before sitting down with a plan designer:

1. Does the land/lot have any covenants you are not aware of? What I mean by this is you should check with the previous owner, Realtor and County or City planning Department and see if there are any restrictions or covenants on what you can actually build there.

2. What are the setbacks for the land/lot and how will that affect the size and footprint of your proposed home? A setback is designated space, pre-determined by the local planning Department, which is not available for your home to sit on. This is usually for right-of-ways for utilities, widening the roads, etc. So for example, if the lot you are considering is 50 feet wide and you have a 5 foot side yard setback, that means you have to take off 5 feet from each side leaving you 40 actual feet for the width of the home foundation. This is an issue also for a City lot where you may want a side garage.

3. Are there height restrictions in the area? What is the maximum height of the roof from grade (level of the land) that you can build? May be a problem for a larger 2 story plan with a steep roof line.

4. Where are the views? Once you have the land and walk around it, you will get a pretty solid idea where you would like the kitchen, living areas and bedrooms to face on the lot. If you have a plan already, you may find that the existing drawing does not account for the right positioning or amount of windows that would take advantage of the view.

5. Sewer and septic. If this is an acreage lot, then you need to see if the land has "perked" and what size of septic field and system you can build and how many bathrooms you would be allowed per how many bedrooms. Your Realtor and local Heath authority should be able to answer that question. A perk test is used to see how the actual soil absorbs or retains water. A failed perk test means alternative septic systems which can be very expensive. A city lot will usually have a sewer system to tie into, but check with the Realtor or local planning department.

6. Privacy. If you find a piece of property that has steady traffic on the front street, you may change your mind on where you want your master bedroom or living area to be. If you have plans already done, this may be a re-draw.

7. Engineering. More and more States and Provinces are requesting engineering reviews on plans before they will issue building permits. If you find land that may be of interest to you, research the local Building Department and find out if structural or civil engineering is required. Better to find out now before you already have plans done that can't be engineered for that zone.

There are many variables in the owner/builder process, especially if things are not thought out correctly or done in a specific order. I have seen too many clients spend thousands of dollars on "dream plans" only to have them restrict where they can find land, are too big for the lot they found, or just don't take advantage of the views, slope of the land, area etc. and end up either getting new plans or giving up altogether.

I am not saying that if you have a set of drawings done that you cannot find the perfect lot for them or that you have done something wrong. What I am suggesting, is that it would be easier and more prudent in the early planning stages to have finding land as the priority before plans and increase your success for a great new home building experience.

How To Become An EASA Licensed Technician

An Aircraft technician is the person who works to maintain the aircraft according to the requirements prescribed by the aircraft and components manufacturers. Basically there are two kinds of technicians, the licensed and non-licensed technicians. The same persons may be known by different names in different countries. In UK and the related countries, they are called Licensed Aircraft Engineer and mechanic. Other countries may call them as the Licensed Mechanic and the non-licensed person is known as an artisan.

Maintaining the Skill's Standard

To be a licensed technician, they have to under training in an approved training school. With the new EASA rules in Europe now, the standard of the knowledge and skills required is known as EASA part 66 and the school that is approved to conduct the courses is refereed under the rule of part 147. These rules and standards were derived from the earlier JAR requirements.

The importance to work towards the standard was recognised by EU, as previously, each of the country was having their own ruling and own civil aviation authority. Now most of the rulings are streamlined and centralized. This helps to ensure smoother operation and reduce the duplicate works.

The aircraft technician works directly on the aircraft. Their jobs include the adhoc repairs, the schedule maintenance works and modification. The overhaul of components such as the blackbox is not included in the license, as it is managed by the approval system of the airlines.

Division of work

As the aircraft is a very complex machine, it is not possible for a person to have the variety of skills and knowledge to maintain the aircraft. As such the works are divided in mechanical and avionics categories. The mechanical are more towards the airframe and engines and the avionics are dealing more with the the computer and instrumentation's. In some areas, the separation may not be too obvious and there may be an overlap of roles. Under EASA, the mechanical category is called B1 and the avionics is called B2

This is a simpler division of work as compared to the earlier system practiced by the British Civil Aviation, where you have separate licenses for Compass, Autopilot and Instruments.

The path to get License

To be a licensed technician, you need to go through an approved training school, the course is about 2.5 years. On completion of it and passing the examinations on each of the module, you will be awarded a frozen license. A full license is awarded when you complete the work schedule, this may take another 2 years.

They handle big construction projects like airports, power generation and waterway, however they also handle smaller structures like residual housing. At times, individuals in this profession may find themselves working on oi lrigs or chemical engineering plants.

In this field long hours are often required to meet deadlines but, usually Quantity surveyors work approximately 39 hours per week. They often don't work on the weekend but it's not uncommon when its crunch time. Part-time work is very rare, only very experience individuals choose to work part-time. This job is usually done from an office but there are times when you have to suit up in the personal safety equipment and get down and dirty on the construction sites. However, this only occurs if working on a pretty large project.

This type of work pays very well. A new trained surveyor can earn up to 327,000 pounds per year and an experienced individual can go as high as 340,000 pounds per year. Senior quantity surveyors as well as those working on projects oversees are the highest paid. There is a very high demand for quantity surveyors. They are greatly needed nationwide and oversees. There are approximately 40,000 individuals in this profession working in the United Kingdom and a few in Europe. Ads are constantly being posted on the internet with hopes of leading others to becoming a quantity surveyor.

The requirements for a Quantity surveyor are pretty straight forward. You should have very strong mathematical skills. Also, you should be one that pays close attention to detail and can budget very well. Be able to negotiate well and be able to influence others. Be knowledgeable of health and safety regulations, have very good verbal and writing skills and be able to work well with others.

This job is very challenging and requires much skill. However, work should not be very difficult to find in this field simply because there is a great need for employees. Paul looked worried. "That's what I'm afraid of," he continued. "It's not just the expense of replacing the foundation that bothers me. I hate the idea of that heavy equipment destroying all the nice planting and landscaping work we've done around that section of the house."

Why A Foundation Settles

Fortunately, this story and others like it can have a happy ending. Foundation settlement problems are prevalent in many parts of the country. Sometimes this happens because the soil beneath a basement or crawl space foundation has poor load-bearing qualities and ends up compressing or sinking over time. Other times, drainage problems actually cause soil to be washed away, creating voids beneath sections of concrete slabs or footings.

Alternative to Excavation-Piering

Regardless of the cause of foundation settlement problems, the cure doesn't need to involve excavation, rubble removal and new construction. The alternative to this extensive and expensive repair strategy is to use piering techniques that connect settled slabs, walls and footings to solid bedrock and/or loadbearing soil. Once piers have been driven down to stable soil at greater depth, strong steel brackets attached to the piers can be used to stabilize settled foundation sections and even raise them back to their original positions.

General home repair contractors don't have access to foundation piers and the equipment required to install them. Nor do they have the training and engineering support to design and warrant this type of permanent repair. That's why some unfortunate homeowners end up paying for excavation and rubble removal work that isn't necessary. The right contractor to call in is a foundation repair specialist. These building professionals are trained to inspect and analyze foundation problems, design permanent repairs and complete the work using highly engineered equipment and materials. In most cases, excavation work can be minimized along with the need to demolish existing masonry and haul it to the landfill.

Minimizing the destructive effects of shifting soils have proven to be a real challenge for property owners who are concerned about preventing structural damage to their foundations, as well as preventing mold and water intrusion in their homes. The importance of creating and maintaining a positive downhill slope condition away from their foundation is paramount, and happily, is one of the most relatively inexpensive and easily achieved preventative measures available. Our focus in this article will be on the practical how's and why's of good positive drainage.

The last 20-30 years have taught some painful lessons to the professional engineer and building communities as they have incurred vast financial penalties. Old conventions about adequate foundation design have proven to be unreliable. As it turns out, you can't simply build foundations the same way in Dallas as you do in Dubuque or in Pittsburgh as you do in Portland, and expect a predictable outcome. As a result, more stringent codes now dictate that a methodical process be employed to first test and identify the properties and characteristics of the soil on a given building site. The results of such an analysis are published in what is commonly known as a "soils letter" or "soils report". A soils report is a critical packet of information that serves both to advise the foundation design process going forward, as well as to inform present and future owners of that property about their responsibilities to maintain conditions that will minimize the risk of structural damage over the long term.

The most basic of all these responsibilities is the maintenance of positive sloped drainage. This is usually defined in most soils reports as a condition where at least 6"-10" of drop occurs in the first 10' of run out from the foundation. Another way of expressing the same thing is to express the angle of the slope by means of a percentage; 6%-10% positive slope for mulched or rock bed areas, and 2%-3% positive slope for hard paved areas, such as sidewalks, driveways, or parking lots. (A lesser slope is usually acceptable for paved areas because hard surfaces like concrete or asphalt naturally conduct water away from the foundation much more efficiently than a porous surface like a mulch bed) With a few basic tools and a bit of patience, these slope percentages may be determined by the average property owner wishing to prevent needless structural and/or water damage to the foundation of his/her property. The process of doing so is as follows:

First, choose a point along the foundation wall and place one end of a 10' long straightedge (such as a 2 x 4) at the same point while extending it out perpendicularly from the foundation.
Next, place a carpenter's level on top of the 2 x 4 while you gradually raise the far end of the 2 x 4 until the bubble indicates a level condition has been achieved.
Finally, simply measure down from the elevated end of the 2 x 4 to the ground directly beneath is and make note of that dimension. For this example, let's suppose that our vertical measurement is 10".

Now, you have all the raw data you need to calculate your slope percentage. The math is simple: divide the vertical dimension, known as the "rise" by the horizontal dimension, which is known as the "run". Don't forget to convert your units of measure as needed so that they are consistent. In our example, we would have 10" (our rise) divided by 120" (our run), equaling.083, which we could round to 8%. As a rule of thumb, an 8% positive slope downward would be considered to be a safe and effective amount of slope to quickly move water away from the foundation before it can penetrate to deeper layers of soil and cause problems. Sometimes, calculating slope or determining what a safe and effective grade may be difficult, so it is possible to have a geotechnical engineering firm or other foundation related company come out and do the calculations.

With a slope calculation, it's easy to find problem spots on your property and change the grade to protect your home. You should check the slope of your property, especially when your home is a new construction, after spring melt. Settling and changes in the grade are often caused by changes in moisture and run off. Preventative maintenance like this can save from a flooded basement, a muddy crawlspace, or even cracked and settling foundations.

When President Obama declared his interest in a green economy, no one got a bigger career boost than the environmental engineer. Before then, the profession was treated somewhere between earth shoes and dolphin hugging by many in the corporate world. Now those with a degree in engineering are in high demand.

As it happens, there is no tried-and-true method to become an environmental engineer. High school students interested in getting started should plan on getting their Bachelor's in many of the already established fields, such as agricultural, biochemical, chemical, civil, electric/electronic, mechanical, nuclear or petrochemical - and that's just for starters. Focusing on any courses that help the ecology while going for this four year degree is always a good idea.

If the grades are good, it will get the budding engineer to the first truly important step, a job. Make sure the first job includes a good continuing education package if possible.

From there, it's time to put in some work. As soon as one can, start making enquiries about going on for a Master's, preferably in a related field. The way the Bureau of Labor Statistics puts it, a good Aerospace engineer usually started as a mechanical one, then specialized in aerodynamics and other related fields in their post-graduate education. Apply the same principle with an emphasis on green subjects.

Along with a Master's, another good idea is to get certification from the American Board of Engineering and Technology. As there is no true certification for environmental, it's probably a good idea to just get the certification in one's general specialty, knowing that adding the "PE", Professional Engineering, letters attached to one's title is a solid calling card.

From there, being an environmental engineer is more defined by where you wind up working than anything else. The main employees are primarily green companies and the federal, state and local governments. Salaries can range from around $55,000 for rookies to three times the amount for the seasoned environmental engineer, with an exceptional benefits package to boot.

Financing the education needed should be relatively easy if a high school student has a strong background in math and the basic sciences. Not only should the student have an easy time obtaining Pell, ACG and related need grants, but also accessible are the National Science Foundation's S-STEM scholarships. That isn't all, though. One should get on a search engine and research some green organizations. No less than Greenpeace itself has a scholarship program, and can point out others with sympathetic interests.
